Onitama is a two-player abstract strategy board game that is easy to learn but difficult to master. The game is played on a 5x5 grid, with each player having five pawns and one master pawn that starts in the center row of their side of the board.

The goal of the game is to either capture your opponent's master pawn or move your own master pawn into your opponent's starting space.

Tips:

  • Plan your moves ahead of time. Onitama is a game of strategy and foresight, so try to anticipate your opponent's moves and plan accordingly.
  • Be aware of the available moves. Each player has access to two movement cards, which can be used to move any of their pawns according to the card's instructions. Be aware of the cards available to both you and your opponent and plan your moves accordingly.
  • Protect your master pawn. Since the game can end if your master pawn is captured, it's important to protect it as much as possible. Use your other pawns to block your opponent's attacks and keep your master pawn out of harm's way.
  • Use your pawns wisely. Although they may seem less important than the master pawn, your pawns can be used strategically to control the board and limit your opponent's movements.
  • Take risks when necessary. Sometimes, it's necessary to take a risk in order to gain an advantage or prevent your opponent from making a strong move. Just make sure that the potential reward outweighs the potential risk.

Tricks:

  • Use the edge of the board to your advantage. Pawns on the edge of the board can only be attacked from one side, making them easier to protect.
  • Try to control the center of the board. Since the master pawn starts in the center row, controlling the center of the board can help you protect your own master pawn while limiting your opponent's movements.
  • Use your opponent's cards against them. If your opponent uses a card to move one of their pawns, that card will become available to you on your next turn. Keep this in mind and plan accordingly.
  • Keep your options open. Try not to use both of your movement cards to move the same pawn, as this can limit your options for future moves.

Strategies:

  • Control the board. Try to limit your opponent's movements by controlling key spaces on the board.
  • Focus on your opponent's master pawn. Since capturing the master pawn is one of the ways to win the game, focus your efforts on protecting your own and attacking your opponent's.
  • Use your pawns to create a "wall" of defense. By placing your pawns in strategic positions, you can limit your opponent's movements and protect your own pawns and master pawn.
  • Be flexible. Onitama is a game of constantly changing positions and opportunities, so be prepared to change your strategy as the game progresses.
  • Watch your opponent's moves carefully. By anticipating your opponent's moves and planning accordingly, you can gain an advantage and control the board.
