1. Develop a fire escape plan with your child: Sit down with your child and create a fire escape plan together. Discuss the importance of knowing two ways out of every room and designate a safe meeting place outside the house. 2. Teach your child how to recognize the sound of the smoke alarm: Make sure your child knows what the smoke alarm sounds like and what they should do when they hear it. Practice reacting quickly and calmly to the sound of the alarm. 3. Teach your child to stay low and crawl under smoke: Instruct your child to stay low to the ground and crawl on their hands and knees if there is smoke in the air. This will help them avoid inhaling smoke and increase their chances of finding a safe exit. 4. Show your child how to test doorknobs for heat: Teach your child to check doorknobs with the back of their hand before opening them. If a doorknob feels hot, it indicates that there is fire on the other side and they should find an alternative escape route. 5. Practice using different escape routes: Familiarize your child with all the possible escape routes in your home. Practice using different routes, including windows, and teach them how to safely climb out or use an escape ladder if necessary. 6. Emphasize the importance of not hiding during a fire: Teach your child that during a fire, they should never hide under beds or in closets. Stress the importance of getting outside and staying outside until help arrives. 7. Teach your child to call 911: Make sure your child knows how to dial emergency services and what information to provide to the operator. Role-play different scenarios to help them feel more confident in making the call. 8. Practice fire drills regularly: Conduct fire drills with your child on a regular basis. Time how long it takes to evacuate and make adjustments if necessary. Repeat the drills until your child can confidently and quickly escape from various parts of the house. 9. Install and maintain smoke alarms: Ensure that smoke alarms are installed on every level of your home and near bedrooms. Test the alarms regularly and replace batteries as needed. Show your child how to maintain the alarms and emphasize their importance. 10. Talk about fire safety outside the home: Teach your child about fire safety outside the home as well. Discuss the dangers of playing with matches or lighters and the importance of reporting any fires they see to a trusted adult. |
