Congratulations to the winner who goes by the name of NinjaAs! Congratulations to the rest of the finalists - Vitto, mexicola and Link . Congratulations to everyone who got to the Championship Phase - 25 best Istanbul players in the world. And Twenty different time zones were represented in the tournament overall! As to some funny data The Championship Phase shaped as follows: 1. 148 rubies were gathered throughout the quarter finals, semi finals and in the Grand Final. 2. The shortest match in the Championship Phase took 16 rounds, the longest 20 rounds - and they were five players matches, mind. 3. The average number of rounds was 17.5. 3. The most wins went to the red player, that includes, quite fittingly, the Grand Final. And finally, the prizes! Amongst the spoils were 40 codes for our various games, and thanks to the generosity of our friends at Pegasus Spiele, two Istanbul Big Boxes and two regular Istanbul tabletop game boxes are being sent to the finalists. Let me also take this moment to officially thank Link , Link and Link for helping us with this entire event. Youre awesome! A short history of board games Did you know how board games even came to be? And how did we get from tabletop to digital format? Heres a quick rundown Board games have been around for almost as far as we know it. The oldest board game to have ever been found was in the ancient Egyptian tomb from 3500 B.C. and its known as Senet. Some very ancient games are still played today! Backgammon comes from ancient Persia, Chess from India, Go from China, all of them in ...ancient times, and all of them survived the test of time, being reproduced and replayed even today. Throughout centuries and around the world different peoples invented and played different board games. Fast forward a few thousand years, we come to America, 1822, where a New York City bookseller F.&R. Lockwood claims (to this day!) to have published the first ever board game in the U.S. - Traveller's Tour Through the United States and its sister game Traveller's Tour Through Europe. A number of board games were published in the XIXth century after that. Eurogames vs American-style board games. Starting from 1960 there begins a talk of Eurogames (or German-style board games) which are less abstract than Chess or Go, but noticeably more abstract than Wargames (where miniatures represent soldiers in fictional battles). They focus more on skill and strategy rather than luck, although the random element is not absent from them. The examples would be Istanbul or Settlers of Catan. American-style board games, in the meantime, focus more on the theme and encourage conflict between players (even in co-op games!). Feature more randomness and tend to have longer play-times. A great example would be Dead of Winter or Charterstone. Digital board games actually can be traced back to the 70, where games with electronic elements became available with titles such as Electronic Battleship or Codename Thief. The fully digital games are a bit younger, though, and one cant help but think about programs like Tabletop Simulator, giving players and publishers a general tool to put any game on the PC screen, and later on, of course, a dedicated digital adaptations of a specific game such as our Steam: Rails to Riches, Eight-Minute Empire and Istanbul: Digital Edition. Most importantly though, no matter what games we play or which way we chose to do so, we have to remember we do it out of love for the format of a board game, and not let our competitive side to obscure the joy we, and people we play with, expect from playing a game! So the '...not Constantinople?' is probably the most common joke tossed our way, Istanbul being kind of our flag product and all. But did you know what the history of the name 'Istanbul' even is? Neither did we. Neither does anyone, as it turns out. Qick-ish google-fu session taught us, that the origin and the meaning of 'Istanbul' is to this day a point of contention. It's not even known at which point in history exactly it had replaced 'Constantinople'; Even mo...re so since this change varied from place to place. The gross oversimplification is that 'Constantinople' - the name this ancient city got in 330 A.D. got replaced by 'Istanbul' in XVth century after the Ottoman conquest. The facts are, actually, that during Ottoman rule it's still been referred to as Constantinople for centuries after, and the first mentions of the name 'Istanbul' predate the Ottomans - back to medieval Greece. What we do know for a fact, however, is that the original name of the city established in 660 B.C. was Byzantium, and it was only reestablished as Constantinople 990 years later. This city has seen a lot! Link
Did you know, that the fountain you so desperately try to avoid in the game of Istanbul: Digital Edition is based on an actual fountain in the city of Istanbul? It was built, funnily enough, not in Istanbul, but in Germany, and then transported to the city in 1900. We also cant help but wonder if its an accident, that our friends Link chose this particular building for the game Link ...
So there is a recurring question we get, when it comes to Istanbul, and that is: '...not Constantinople?' And that got us thinking If you, the players, could change the setting of the game to any other place, real or imaginary, present, past or future, what would you change it to? ... Link
Did you know how AI works in Istanbul: Digital Edition? Easy AI only looks one move ahead. Medium AI makes plans for two moves. ... Hard AI will look forward four or even five moves as well as take the board state into consideration along the way.
We are pleased to announce that we are working on Istanbul: Digital Edition port to Nintendo Switch! Troublesome as the path may be, we welcome the challenge, and are happy to add Nintendo Switch to our list of supported platforms. For this, and future games!:
