"Hou Yifan, the youngest womens world champion in history, tells David Cox about her journey to become one of the strongest female players of all time. Freebie Link You and Judit Polgar are by far the two strongest female players ever to have played the game. What has enabled you to buck the trend, go on to reach the higher echelons of the game and compete with top male players? Hou Yifan I think it comes down to a combination of talent and opportunity. If you get more ch...ances when youre younger and better training conditions, itll be easier to improve faster and further. Some of the girls are probably lacking some of these conditions. "Siegbert Tarrasch was one of the best players of his time and definitely deserves to be included in the list of strongest chess players who never became world champion. Just like Reuben Fine, Tarrasch was a prolific chess writer and was even called 'Teacher of Germany' for his numerous chess manuals. I bet many of you have heard Tarrasch's famous rule in rook endgames, which states that you are supposed to put a rook behind passed pawns regardless if the pawn is your oppon...ent's or yours. Also, his immortal 'a knight on the rim is grim' saying is something we all learn. Still, there is one of his sayings that is not well known, yet very useful. Bobby Fischer even quotes it in his book My Sixty Memorable Games. In the annotations to his game vs. GM Kholmov, Fischer said As Tarrasch wrote 'When you don't know what to do, wait for your opponent to get an ideait's sure to be wrong!' In the second round of the current FIDE World Cup tournament in Khanty-Mansiysk, the Azeri Grandmaster Eltaj Safarli bravely played the Evans Gambit against Indian prodigy Nihal Sarin. This particular line dates back at least 150 years! In fact, the move 7.Qb3 was first played by the legendary Paul Morphy from this game in 1855.

"Pal Benko was born July 15, 1928 and died August 25, 2019 at the age of 91. Instead of throwing endless games at you (okay, okayI will throw you a lot of games), I first want you to understand Benkos personality and who Benko really was. Benko was extremely creative, had a great sense of humor and was a fantastic chess player. Benko never shied away from what he believed was right; he was clearly a mans man. The first time I got close to Benko was more than 25 years a...go in a very strong tournament in New York. We were sitting at boards, side by side. I cant remember whom I was playing, but I do remember Benkos game; his opponent had brought a very expensive board and pieces, and in the middle of the game Benko blundered and lost a whole rook. Pal went berserk, grabbed the board and pieces, and destroyed it by throwing it across the room. I remembered that he was known to blunder rooks quite often, but he almost never gave away other pieces and pawns. Years later, when we were friends, I ask him about the 'giving the rook' thing. He laughed, and said he indeed tossed away rooks, but he never knew why he did it. " Read the full article here Freebie Link

"Football is sometimes called 'chess on the gridiron.' And by sometimes, I mean I just called it that. But the game is actually often compared to war, which is the most common metaphor for chess. And if football is war, the quarterback is the field general. As week three of the NFL season begins tonight, we look at five marquee quarterback matchups to see not only who is best on the field, but also who would win a head-to-head chess match. ... The rules Each quarterback brings his existing mental faculties and competitive spirit, but gets five hours of chess lessons with the Freebie Link coach of his choice to prepare. For fun, let's imagine the chess match is played live at the 50-yard line of Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, with 65,000 screaming fans at halftime of the upcoming Super Bowl." "I bet you've heard the cliche that 'chess is 99 percent tactics' thousands of times. While it is greatly overused and exaggerated to some degree, overall it is correct. The enormous strength of modern computers is based on their unmatched ability to calculate. Naturally, if you want to get better in chess, you need to improve your calculation skills. Here at Freebie Link you can find a variety of useful tools that will help you to achieve your goal. I would recommend to sta...rt with lessons, where you can find learning material that will match your level from very basic checkmates to advanced tactics. The very popular Puzzle Rush will let to check how well you learned from the lessons. Just be carefulPuzzle Rush can be very addictive. As a practical player, you can encounter one problem, though. Most of the tactical puzzles have a clear, definite result. Like 'check, check, checkmate,' or 'capture, capture, win a piece.' Meanwhile, in regular games, most calculations lead to less definite results. For example, you can execute a four-move forced line with a sacrifice that would lead just to a promising attacking position. So, should you go there? It is great if you are a genius, like Mikhail Tal, who used to say 'you sacrifice first, then calculate'but what if you are mortal, like most of us?" Continue reading here Freebie Link
