Can Musical Training Make You Smarter? Remember the 1990s Mozart Effect? It claimed that listening to Mozart would make kids smarter. Alas! Passive listening doesnt do much for intelligence, but music instruction positively correlates with verbal fluency, academic success, and even IQ, depending on the intensity of training.... In general, areas of cognition improve the more we use them. When it comes to playing music, we benefit from the complexity of the task. Just think of everything a musician does at once read, process, and play the notes according to their indicated rhythm and time signature...Thats firing on all cylinders! Musically trained 5 to 7 year olds showed the strongest correlations to cognitive development. But people over 60 who undertook piano lessons for 6 months also improved working memory, perceptual speed, and motor coordination. Its never too late to engage with music! A few weeks ago, in the midst of the protests following George Floyds death, we acknowledged and denounced systemic racism, and affirmed commitment to equality and justice. We promised that wed concretely honor that commitment and want to give members an update. We observed Juneteenth for the first time this year and support its becoming a national holiday. We also initiated a matching program for employee donations made in the name of racial justice. We will contin...ue to do so for the remainder of the year, focusing on different organizations each quarter. Heres some information on who were supporting through the end of August BLACK GIRLS CODE empowers young women of color aged 7-17 to become innovators in STEM fields, leaders in their communities, and builders of their own futures through exposure to computer science and technology. SURJ (Showing Up for Racial Justice) BAY AREA helps organize white and non-POC folks for racial justice, planning anti-racism events and creating safe spaces for those who feel compelled to volunteer, organize, and empower. ELLA BAKER CENTER FOR HUMAN RIGHTS works locally, statewide, and nationally to break the cycles of incarceration and poverty by shifting resources away from prisons and punishment and towards opportunities that make communities safe, healthy, and strong. THE TREVOR PROJECT serves diverse communities around the country with an intersectional approach to supporting the mental health of LGBTQ+ youth. ANTI POLICE-TERROR PROJECT is a Black-led, multi-racial, intergenerational coalition that seeks to build a replicable and sustainable model to eradicate police terror in communities of color. Finally, weve begun and formalized an internal conversation inviting all employees (not just the departments who officially oversee recruiting and HR) to review business practices so that they best support diversity, equity and inclusion. We will keep you posted as we finalize what changes Lumosity will be making.

Just so you know where we stand. The United States has an undeniable history of racial violence, and position is solidarity with those who seek to dismantle the systems that support and inflict that violence. To those fighting for change take heart, and take care! This week has also forced us to reflect on a number of things. Weve always been committed to diversity, but in the upcoming weeks, we will re-commit to allyship by evaluating processes, culture, and product to see what we can do better. Well also be donating to organizations that work to dismantle systemic racism. We will provide updates on these endeavors over the next few weeks. Love, Lumosity
