Leatherback Turtles inhabit the open oceans and have a wide and varied distribution as they can be found as far north as Alaska and far south as South Africa. They are the largest species of sea turtles and can weigh up to 1,100 pounds. These turtles are at great risk from incidental take by commercial fisheries as well as pollution in the form of article that look to them like food such as balloons and plastic bags.
