The Janissaries were the corps of private household troops of the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. They first became a standing army during the reign of Murad I, and were ultimately abolished by Mahmud II in 1826. The Janissary corps were the first official standing army formed in the region following the collapse of the Roman Empire. Their lives were strictly regimented, and they demonstrated incredible loyalty to the Sultan. They were forbidden to marry, fostering... a strong sense of unity within the corp, were supervised 24 hours a day, and subjected to rigorous discipline. Marriage was allowed only when a Janissary was released from their service. In combat, they were known for surgical strikes at crucial moments, which played a role in building their legend and impressive record of victory. Which troop type do you think most closely resembles the Janissaries? Share your ideas in the comments below!

Pargali Ibrahim Pasha, also known as Frenk Ibrahim Pasha, served as grand vizier of the Ottoman Empire for 13 years during the reign of Suleiman I. The "Pargali" in his name is an epithet meaning "one who hails from Parga". Ibrahim was born into an Eastern Orthodox family, becoming close friends with Suleiman as a child. In 1523, Suleiman appointed Ibrahim to the position of grand vizier, replacing Piri Mehmed Pasha, who had been appointed in 1518 by Suleiman's father, Selim I. Despite his huge power and influence, he was eventually executed in 1536 on the orders of the emperor and his wealth and property confiscated.

Barbarossa Hayreddin (1478 - 1546) was a famous pirate and Sultan of Algiers known to some as Barbarossa II. He and his elder brother Oruc were known as the Barbarossa Brothers (barbarossa meaning "red beard" in Italian). Hayreddin was born in Greece, converting to Islam along with his brother when the Ottomans occupied their homeland and joining the Ottoman army. Eventually the two brothers left the army to become pirates, sailing far and wide. While fighting the Spanish in... 1514, Oruc was injured and Hayreddin took over as head of their pirate band. They split with the Ottoman Empire when Oruc declared himself king in 1518, after which the Spanish king, Charles V, invaded Algiers. Lacking support, Oruc was defeated and killed, with Hayreddin taking over as king and successor to the title of Barbarossa. Once upon the throne, Hayreddin's first act was to repair his kingdom's relations with the Ottomans, becoming an admiral in their navy and confirmed as the ruler of Algiers. Hayreddin lived a long and full life, eventually passing away in Istanbul.
