The original Japanese word "saburai" means "those who serve in close attendance to nobility", which is a very precise way to define these warriors. Their origins date back to the final years of the 8th century, when farmers took up arms to defend against the Emperor's tax collectors. Thus, the first samurai families were born. Later, in the 12th century, the samurai established themselves as one of the most prominent social classes in Japan, when they amassed financial, military and political power, as rebellion wars were fought throughout the country.
