Marcus Leopold was once a loyal knight, the commander of the Griffin Squadron of the Order of the Tempest, a front line defender of Griffin City on the border of the Steliad Empire. He was imprisoned by Gufeld II following the loss of Griffin City due to lack of reinforcements, and sentenced to death on the grounds of treason. On the scaffold, Marcus was overcome by the hatred emanating from Samuel, the King of Hatred, who was summoned by Gufeld II, and he turned into a Blackfire Puppet. Out of control, he fought his way off the scaffold and joined the army of the Blackfire Knights. During this clash, Marcus' left hand was chopped off by a guard. The King of Hatred gifted him with an iron claw as a reward for becoming a Blackfire Puppet. From then on, he was known as the Claw of Vengeance. Using the power of darkness bestowed upon him by his suffering and hatred, the Claw of Vengeance will direct his fury towards all his enemies.
