Barbarossa Hayreddin (1478 - 1546) was a famous pirate and Sultan of Algiers known to some as Barbarossa II. He and his elder brother Oruc were known as the Barbarossa Brothers (barbarossa meaning "red beard" in Italian). Hayreddin was born in Greece, converting to Islam along with his brother when the Ottomans occupied their homeland and joining the Ottoman army. Eventually the two brothers left the army to become pirates, sailing far and wide. While fighting the Spanish in... 1514, Oruc was injured and Hayreddin took over as head of their pirate band. They split with the Ottoman Empire when Oruc declared himself king in 1518, after which the Spanish king, Charles V, invaded Algiers. Lacking support, Oruc was defeated and killed, with Hayreddin taking over as king and successor to the title of Barbarossa. Once upon the throne, Hayreddin's first act was to repair his kingdom's relations with the Ottomans, becoming an admiral in their navy and confirmed as the ruler of Algiers. Hayreddin lived a long and full life, eventually passing away in Istanbul.
