Did you know that ancient Roman cities had a complex sewer system, with the very first one estimated to have been built all the way back between 8 and 735 BC? To fix a growing sanitation problem, many Roman towns had aqueducts, which brought water from the nearby hills. The water would then flow through a system of clay or lead pipes with numerous valves for flow control. The Romans also had a separate system of pipes for carrying sewage away from the streets and dumping i...t into a nearby river. This was a huge improvement compared to the earlier style of Greek sewage management, where people simply poured their waste into the streets. Cities within the Roman Empire even had public toilets and generally payed serious attention to sanitation.
