But Red Baron didnt join in the air force at the beginning.He chose Cavalry regiment first.When World War I broke out,he fought on the east and west lines.Afterwards,Cavalry regiment was disbanded and he was transferred to the supply regiment. In May,1915, he was eager to fight at the front-line and chose to serve for the air force. In January,1917,when he shot down the 16th plane,he was granted with [Pour le Mrite], it was Germany's highest honor at that time.He also trained many elite pilots. [Pour le Mrite],it was the highest decoration of Prussian and German Imperial armies.Pilots must achieve 8 victories in air combat to get this medal. Until 1917,the requirement was changed to 16 air victories.Red Baron was the only pilot who achieved [Pour le Mrite] under such harsh condition. However,Red Baron suffered a severe head injury in one combat.After returning to the pilot team, he often got vomiting and headaches after flying. In 1918,Red Baron became a legendary pilot.It was said that German military brass was afraid German morale would be suffered if Red Baron was killed in the war.His superiors once asked him to retire, but he just refused and said he would keep fighting. Unfortunately, the tragedy still came.At that time,he was chasing a British royal air force fighter.As he turned the corner, he found himself followed by another fighter.Suddenly,a fatal bullet struck him in the right lower abdomen and pierced his chest. No one knew who killed Red Baron.Some historians and doctors thought he was shot down by air defense artillery. Some thought he was killed by one Australia soldier. Until 2004,University of Missouri researchers pointed out Red Baron died because of his head injury.Head trauma leaded to brain damage,this affected his judgment in battle.

In movie -- [War Horse],the final fearless charge of cavalry troops showed the ruthlessness of battlefield.Their sad ending told us the machine guns eventually defeated traditional cavalry. The main character of this movie is not a brave soldier , but a horse called Joy.It was bought by father of a boy,Albert.The boy stayed with this horse from... then on.But before long,German troops attacked and father had no choice and sold joy to local cavalry troops.Since then,Joy began to act as a soldier. Joy changed his masters several times in the war.The first master was a cavalry captain.But unfortunately, even most powerful cavalry troops were finally defeated by machine guns. The weapon used by cavalry troops in the movie was 1908 style cavalry sword equipped with British troops.The British thought that the most effective method of attack when cavalry charged was the thrust.This method of attack was deadly to infantry. Before the war,the British had many ideas about this kind of cavalry sword. Lightening the weight of cavalry sword will reduce the burden on the cavalry troops.With the charge of horses,the attack would be very efficient.British top military brass called it [Most Excellent Cavalry Weapon]. However,this kind of sword was so inconvenient to be used. Even if slender body of the sword would bring horrible penetration in a charge,the sword was extremely hard to pull out after killing an enemy.Soldiers may discard the sword.In addition,this type of attack put a lot of pressure on the cavalry's wrists.They would get hurt easily. In the movie, as the story went, Joys master changed again and again.From British Captain, French farmer with his granddaughter, to German soldier...In the end, would Joy be reunited with Albert who was always looking for him?
