The round-robin stage of the Lindores Abbey Rapid Challenge being played on Chess24 came to a stunning finish yesterday - Magnus Carlsen faced Alireza Firoujza in R11. Carlsen had to avert defeat with black at all costs to qualify for the Knockouts, while Firoujza required a win-on-demand to make it to the next phase. In the end, it was Magnus Carlsen who won a great game to book a knockout spot, while Firoujza, Grischuk, Duda, and Wei Yi were eliminated. On the other hand..., Hikaru Nakamura thoroughly dominated this stage as he cruised to an unbeaten 7.5/11. The Quarterfinals commence tomorrow and here are your matchups! Nakamura - Aronian Karjakin - Dubov Yu Yangyi - Ding Liren Wesley So - Carlsen Which 4 players do you think will make it to the Semis!? Link

Do you recognize the two famous personalities in the picture below? In what may seem like a slightly surprising crossover, it's the great revolutionary Che Guevara (left) pictured talking to chess legend Miguel Najdorf in 1962. Being the Director of the National Bank and Minister of Industries, Che Guevara covered the cost of the Capablanca Memorial chess tournaments. And guess what? The Capablanca Memorial was the highest paid chess tournament in the world at that time! So w...hy this story all of a sudden? Well, flashback broadcast of the first ever Capablanca Memorial played in 1962 came to a close today. It was won by Miguel Najdorf half a point ahead of Spassky and Polugaevsky in a stunning fashion, considering the legend lost both his first two games in this huge 22-player round robin! He won nine straight games from rounds 6 to 14 and then wrapped up the event with four consecutive wins in the last four rounds. If you haven't followed this event on FollowChess, we urge you to play over the games, especially those by Najdorf! Link
