The horse-shaped stone is an enormous gray granite boulder, found on the Konevets Island, that is in the Leningrad oblast. ... This boulder is approx. 75 in weight, but there is nothing, Mother Nature cannot handle millenia ago, a glacier from the mountains of Scandinavia brought the boulder in its womb. Yet, as time passed, glacier melted, while the stone still remains. Back in the time of pagan traditions, Konevets served as the herding place for horses. People believed the boulder, resembling the head of a sleeping horse, would protect animals from any kind of diseases or other ailments. Therefore, to thank and pay homage to the spirits of this island, people used to sacrifice a horse. This has been the actual reason to name the boulder the horse-shaped stone, and the Island the Konevets Island. In the late 14th century, reverend Arsenius came ashore this island. He described the place as follows this place is as horrid as the deep forest, and even beyond, tis tainted and fouled. Reverend spent the entire night in prayers, and in the morning, he went in a crucession around the stone holding an image of the Mother of God in his hands, and subsequently besprinkled the boulder with holy water.
