Starting at 5 PM Pacific Time (midnight UTC), this weekend's limited time event will take Terraformers, for the first time, far beyond the bounds of solar system, to a planet known to exist only by a select few, including the leadership of the Daughters of Gaia. An oceanic world with but a few small islands on which to settle, Pontus could well become a far-flung paradise, if the surface can be drained and the uncovered lands below are made to sprout new life. Can you turn this blue planet green before time runs out? Let us know your progress in the comments below!

Rebecca Freyja O'Rourke was born, like all Gaians of her generation, in shelters beneath the suffocating clouds of Venus. Ever since the Gaian Revolution more than a century before, her people had huddled together on their hellish rock, presumed dead by the rest of the solar system and slowly developing their radical new society in isolation. Originally interested in becoming a painter, O'Rourke had a spiritual awakening during a mission to one of the outlying garden domes on... Aphrodite Terra. In a moment of crystalline clarity while working in the greenhouses she perceived the interconnectedness of life as a singular and profound experience, a "green wave" spreading out from each individual seed into the infinite universe beyond. By the time she returned to the Gaian capital city of Ishtar she had resolved that she would make her mark in the religious Sisterhood, spreading the Gaian gospel of Veriditas. It was around that time in the rich halls of Ishtar, that she met her greatest ally and future husband, Zhou Xi Wang-mu Lee. A direct descendant of the legendary Gaian founder Eleanor Lee, Admiral Lee was a rising star in the Gaian military during a critical moment in their history after more than a century hiding beneath the clouds of Venus, the Gaians were preparing to launch a powerful fleet into orbit and unveil themselves to the rest of humanity in an event called the Blossoming. Their marriage formed a power-couple that would reshape Gaian history forever Rebecca the heart and soul of a new religion in bloom, Zhou the clenched fist of an empire on the rise. Several years later, on the same day that Zhou's fleet first began broadcasting their presence to the solar system, Rebecca gave birth to their first child a daughter named Alana. After the Blossoming, Rebecca was elected as the new Rose Queen, one of two co-queens of the Gaian nation. From this new position, she has finally begun to execute the vision that came to her all those years ago in the greenhouse to spread Veriditas throughout the cosmos, a green wave that would see life blossoming on every planet in sight, and a Gaian empire at the vanguard of humanity's efforts from that day forward.

NASA has recently brought together experts from multiple fields of astronomical study to probe the mysteries of Jupiter's atmosphere in a new way. By combining multiwavelength observations from the Hubble Space Telescope and Gemini Observatory with close-up shots sent by the orbiting Juno spacecraft, they've been able to present impressive new images, and gain insights into the most turbulent storms in solar system! Of particular interest to researchers is Jupiter's infam...ous Great Red Spot, the shifting dark features of which have remained a mystery until now. By combining visible-light images from Hubble with thermal infrared images from Gemini, these dark regions have indicated as being holes in the cloud layer where heat from Jupiter's interior is free to escape into space. Lead researcher Michael Wong compared the Spot to a jack-o-lantern, providing a glimpse of the super-heated center depths of the gas giant. This innovative study of Jupiter's unique storm systems carries with it hopes of shedding light on the true nature of largest neighboring planet. By studying its lightning patterns and estimating the amount of water in Jupiter's atmosphere, Wong's team could help crack the code on how gas giants are formed, and therefore how entire solar system came to be! This weekend presents Terraformers with a unique challenge a bit closer to home. In order to inspire hope among the struggling survivors of a not-too-distant Earth, Admiral Buzz Sullivan seeks your help to create a safe, self-sustaining community on Moon. Can you spawn a population of millions in the time allotted? Will you do so through rapid terraforming, or erecting countless Hab Domes across the Moon's barren surface? Let us know how you are progressing in the comments below!

Admiral Buzz Sullivan made his name in the midst of Earth's bleakest hour, known to history as The Sundering. With the world suffering repeated hammerblows, both from above and below, Buzz sought to secure humanity's future by serving in the UN Peacekeeping forces, alongside many of his peers. He hoped to be providing relief supplies and helping to rebuild shattered communities around the world, but as the situation continued to worsen and wars broke out like brushfires, Sull...ivan found himself rising the ranks in what was quickly becoming a global military effort to prevent the unraveling of civilization itself. By the time the crisis had passed, his brilliant tactics and asymmetrical mind had caught the attention of General Secretary David Munoz, who put him in charge of the UNSA's burgeoning interplanetary fleet. Marked by ambition matched only by his genuine brilliance, the newly-minted admiral turned his energy and focus to his first task as commander of the UNSA building a functional, self-sustaining community of refugees on the Moon. Such a monumental achievement would give the battered survivors back on Earth something to aspire to, something to look up and dream about, a singular vision of hope for people around the world. But even more than that, Sullivan knew that success meant cementing the UNSA's place as the guardian of humanity on every world, and a guiding light in species's future out among the stars.

Last week, NASA provided these newly reprocessed images of the surface of Jupiter's icy moon Europa, originally taken by the Galileo spacecraft over 20 years ago. Galileo was the first spacecraft to orbit an outer planet, which it did for most of the 90s before six more years of flybys of Jupiter's other moons, finally ending its mission by entering the planet's atmosphere in 2003. Using modern image processing techniques, scientists were able to recreate these sharpened imag...es of three unique locations on Europa, dubbed the Chaos Transition, the Crisscrossing Bands, and the Chaos Near Agenor Linea, respectively. The enhanced-color images highlight distinct geologic features indicating areas of relatively pure water ice in light blue and white, and reddish areas made of salts and other non-ice materials. This composition gives vital clues to how Europa's surface was formed, as it is intriguingly one of the youngest surfaces in the solar system! Beyond just their strange beauty and scientific puzzle solving, these updated images are helping NASA prepare for the arrival of the Europa Clipper spacecraft, Galileo's successor seeking to launch in the next several years. Through multiple flybys of Europa, hopefully including direct encounters with the its spouting plumes of water, we will hopefully get to learn much more about the moon's massive subsurface ocean, and whether it might already support life yet to be seen! There is a name which, upon uttering in terraforming circles, inspires equal parts awe and dread. An engineering boogeyman of sorts, the name represents the boundless enthusiasm of one who can't help but build and innovate, mingled with the inevitable fallout of unintended consequences, and all the bewilderment and frustration that comes with it. That name... is Steve. Born to an eccentric family of entertainers who shunned the idea of last names, Steve found he had little in... common with his siblings who eagerly sought the adulation of cameras and crowds. He preferred instead to work behind the scenes in various crafts such as studio tech and set design, though his elaborate mechanical constructions led to a number of accidents (thankfully, none of them fatal). Considered very much the black sheep of his clan, Steve knew there must be a place beyond Mars where his unchecked architectural passion would be appreciated. That's when a fateful broadcast came through his homemade interplanetary radio, the first one made that hadn't immediately burst into flames. It was the Sons of Hephaestus, putting out a call to every industrial-minded spacefarer interested in joining up with their cause. Steve had no interest in their politics, but leapt at an opportunity to win praise for his unique engineering prowess. Upon hearing that Steve would build massive habitations quickly for a mere pittance in credits, the Sons' leadership signed him up to travel the cosmos, a decision they've questioned ever since. Have you ever had a Hab Dome suddenly jump to level X, causing more coastal habitations to flood? Have you found yourself stuck on a single terraforming project because all your credits have mysteriously disappeared? Has a rogue bit of code caused a flagship event to misfire, leaving your population befuddled and fearful of what calamity might befall them next? You have Steve to thank. May we forever raise fist to the stars and curse his name.

Horizon CEO Appolo Matiba has a number of grandchildren to his name. In spite of their pampered upbringing, or perhaps because of it, most have lived mundane and unambitious lives. But Nubia, the daughter of his eldest child Vivica, has always broken the mold. Demonstrating the same Midas Touch that her grandfather was so famous for, Nubia built a music empire in her early twenties while simultaneously earning a Master's in Global Business and an MBA in Entrepreneurship. Nubi...a believed she could guide her own destiny with these accomplishments, yet even after going quintuple Platinum with her single "Slow Dancing in Hyperspace," she realized life as a pop star would mean forever being told where to go and what to do. It was at this point she turned her focus back home to the family business, and to her grandfather's recent decisions at the Horizon Corporation. Setting her sights on a languishing and over-budget program to terraform the atmosphere of Venus, Nubia proposed a complete overhaul of Horizon's terraforming efforts thus far, with herself as de facto project lead. Her grandfather was enamored with the plan, and even more with the idea of bringing home this ambitious, confident prodigy who bore his name. With so many rival factions vying to claim any small patch of the solar system as their own, Horizon's newest rising star has her work cut out for her. Yet Nubia is already looking a dozen moves ahead, making plans to expand the company's portfolio beyond what even her legendary grandfather could have imagined, and to cement herself as the heir apparent to the greatest financial powerhouse in history.

In November 2012, astronomers discovered the mysterious orbiting body that came to be known as Kappa Andromedae b circling around its host star. Kappa Andromedae currently holds the record for the most massive star known to host a directly imaged planet or lightweight brown dwarf star companion, and observers have yet to officially make that distinction. With a mass almost 13 times that of Jupiter, this "super-Jupiter" could easily be classified as another star, yet it falls just shy of being able to generate energy through fusion, leaving it in a sort of limbo between planet and star. We must hope that improved imaging and measurement technologies will one day give us an answer! Congratulations to the 54% of fans who answered correctly!

Massive, bright stars aren't known for having many orbiting planets, as their strong ultraviolet light tends to completely strip these celestial bodies of their atmospheres. One such bright and short-lived star is known to play host to a "super-Jupiter," an object teetering in mass between an enormous gas planet and a miniature brown dwarf star. Can you name the host star?

Last Saturday marked the 50th anniversary of the famously failed mission to the Moon which gave birth to the infamous, though often misquoted, phrase "Houston, we've had a problem here." On April 11th, 1970, Apollo 13 launched from Kennedy Space Center with the goal of landing its crew on the Moon, the third crew in history to do so. Fatefully, an oxygen tank explosion and a cascade of system malfunctions forced the spacecraft to return to Earth ahead of schedule. Thanks to ...the ingenuity of flight director Kranz and NASA's engineers at mission control, and the poise of the astronauts operating under unimaginable pressure, Apollo 13's command module landed in the Pacific Ocean on April 17th with all three crew members safely aboard. Ironically, astronauts Lovell, Swigert and Haise hold a distance record of 248,655 miles from Earth, due to looping around the far side of the moon, that still stands to this day. While a technical failure, the Apollo 13 mission stands as a testament to the power of calm, critical thinking under intense conditions, and the emotional lengths humans will go to guarantee the lives of their peers. When facing disaster, it's important to remember how we can all persevere, and rise to the occasion. Do you remember how you first learned about Apollo 13? Let us know! Image Credit NASA

A UNSA satellite has located what the administration believes might be the source of the mysterious 16-day FRB signal reported back in February. In a distant sector of space, different celestial bodies seem to blink in and out of existence. Some appear strikingly familiar, like planets already settled by various factions. Others are wholly unfamiliar, but possess highly fluctuating parameters such as heat and pressure, as well as, in some cases, organic life that would be of ...great interest to Gaian biologists. Though causing no harm to the satellite, the anomaly seems to be growing exponentially, at such a rate that astronomers wonder if own corner of space might become enveloped by this distortion. Only time will tell, but because the UNSA has failed to keep a lid on this secret, rival factions are already plotting to race towards the anomaly, to learn what gifts it might offer their side. Stay tuned for exciting changes, Terraformers...

Looking for some engaging commentary to listen to while you terraform safely at home? In case you hadn't heard, TerraGenesis has an official tie-in podcast, all about the science that inspired and ultimately led to the creation of the game. But maybe you did already know that, because the podcast is quite popular! Currently resting in the top 5 podcasts on Apple Podcasts, and the top THREE astronomy podcasts, the show has taken on a life that creator and host Alexand...er Winn could never have anticipated! And because so many of these new listeners have displayed an interest in the real science of space exploration that is fundamental to the game, rather than the mechanics of the game itself, the podcast is now being reworked to focus on deep dives into what terraforming would look like in world. You can hear all the details in the newest bonus episode Link The newly renamed podcast, Settle the Stars The Science of Space Exploration, is available on iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher, or YouTube, and makes a great companion to your at-home terraforming experience with TerraGenesis. NASA has spent decades experimenting with ways to effectively grow plants within the airtight confines of spacecrafts, and the resulting innovations have benefitted not only future journeys into deep space, but existing industries here on Earth. One such innovation is the Advanced Astroculture (ADVASC) experiment, which has spawned chambers that create optimal conditions for the growth of soybeans, mustard seeds, and more! ADVASC hardware includes a novel air "scrubber" desig...ned to remove ethylene, a gas let off by plants which, when confined, causes them to ripen and decay. The ethylene scrubber uses titanium dioxide and ultraviolet light to convert the gas into trace amounts of water and carbon dioxode, actually feeding the plants instead of harming them! This same NASA technology has been licensed to supermarkets, operating rooms, and has been particularly effective for wineries, due to the near total elimination of bacteria and mold which would otherwise grow in storage cellars. In the meantime, experimentation with growing crops in microgravity continues aboard the International Space Station. What other NASA-led advancements would you most look forward to? And if mustard and soybeans aren't your thing, what growable foodstuffs would you most like to see produced in space? Image Credit NASA

While the notable factions of the terraforming race and their attendant governors aggressively vie to achieve independence before their rivals, there are those with a skill and passion for the planetary sciences who have no such ambitions. Many seek to terraform simply due to pride in their work, and often the most eccentric intellectuals are the ones least willing to conform to the whims of any organization. Initially the Daughters, Sons, Horizon and UNSA all shunned those w...ho would not in some way pledge their continued loyalty to their cause. However, as planetary expansion efforts took these factions beyond solar system into Trappist-1, and their leadership sought to engage in more advanced historical terraforming simulations, they all realized the need to engage with those who might not share their values, but would be willing to contract with their group if the work appealed to them. Thus terraforming opportunities have never been in short supply, and highly regarded experts have begun to emerge in their respective fields while maintaining a high degree of independence. These celebrated virtuosos span many generations, and include maverick scientists, philosopher businessmen, and mathematics and engineering prodigies. While their self-determination streak frustrates fellow governors who wish they'd simply pick a side, their unmatched talent is indispensable in the terraforming game, and shall ensure their continued autonomy. After all, scientific progress is not always meant to manifest itself as a contest of ideas. Rather, progress for the sake of progress is often enough to drive the most talented among us, and society itself, towards an exciting future.

NASA TECHNOLOGY HIGHLIGHT The Goddard Institute is currently managing a project which, if launched, could revolutionize view of the universe. The project is called the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST), a space telescope combining heritage hardware from Hubble with new innovations in astronomy, and providing a potential viewing area 100 times larger than its predecessor! In addition to searching for the secrets of dark energy and unraveling other mysteries of... astrophysics, WFIRST has been tasked with discovering more planets outside solar system. While we can't know for certain how many exoplanets the telescope will find, it should have the capacity to do so faster than ever before. Whereas the area outlined in blue in this image took Hubble over 650 hours to image, WFIRST would be capable of mapping the whole galaxy in only three hours! While the project's continued funding remains in question, and NASA is focusing instead on completion of the James Webb Space Telescope for the time being, WFIRST presents an exciting possible future where view of the cosmos is expanded a hundredfold! What excites you most learning the secrets of dark matter, or the discovery of new planets? Let us know! Image Credits DSS, R. Gendle, NASA, GSFC, ASU, STScI, B. F. Williams

When the suffocating clouds that had defined Venus for eons first began to drain from its surface, it was as if a cry went out across the solar system. On Earth, in response to the boom of the terraforming industry and the Gaian religious fervor springing up around it, a counter-movement began to form. Soon after, encrypted broadcasts began emanating from mining colonies across the solar system, calling for the protection of all spacefaring patriots whose way of life was bein...g threatened by the irresponsible transformation of the worlds they've already begun to call home. This anti-terraforming crusade was founded by Te Hau Arataki, a seasoned explorer and philosopher whose writings argued that each planet and moon had a unique character that was inalienable and precious, and that humanity had no right to transform a planet's true nature to suit their own needs. But what Te Hau viewed as a moral framework, her followers have taken up as a call to arms. As thousands of local homesteaders and workers coalesced into a ragtag alliance of partisan cells, the Planetary Purity movement moved from debate into action. If Te Hau was the mind and heart, Rex Jansson has become the clenched fist of their movement, leading attacks and raids on terraforming facilities (and Gaian settlements) throughout the solar system. But while Rex's daughter Pim works alongside her father on the battlefield, his oldest son Neil seeks a subtler path to victory, one that just might be able to avoid plunging the entire solar system into war. The news eventually dubbed this movement the Sons of Hephaestus, in mocking opposition to their rivals the Daughters of Gaia, and as a pejorative reference to their macho, working class reputation. At first shunning the labels of others, the Hephaestians have gradually begun to embrace the moniker, as a testament to the "brotherhood" of survivalists, craftsmen, warriors, and philosophers their movement has brought together. While the Sons remain divided on the use of extreme measures, all members view themselves as crusaders in an underdog struggle, and know that they must act quickly. For to concede ground to the terraformers would be to see that ground tarnished, transformed, and ultimately destroyed. As guardians of the stars, the Sons of Hephaestus vow to preserve every planet's independence, no matter the cost.

In 1961, Dr. Frank Drake conceived an equation designed to solve for N, the number of civilizations in the Milky Way with which communication should be possible. To arrive at this number, the following are multiplied... R* The rate of formation of stars suitable for the development of intelligent life. fp The fraction of those stars with planetary systems. ne The number of planets, per solar system, with an environment suitable for life.... fl The fraction of suitable planets on which life actually appears. fi The fraction of life bearing planets on which intelligent life emerges. fc The fraction of civilizations that develop a technology that releases detectable signs of their existence into space. L The length of time such civilizations release detectable signals into space. While the equation hasn't brought us any closer to locating any intelligent extraterrestrials, it has provided a durable framework for research, and stimulated meaningful debate and intellectual curiosity, for decades.

Is there intelligent life somewhere else in the galaxy? There is no way to be certain, but astronomers have at least tried to answer the question of how many advanced civilizations are likely to exist in the Milky Way, based on known factors and mathematical probability. Which of these names is a notable theory about life among the stars?
