The successful terraforming of Mars drastically changed humankind's role in the known universe, and no other group has embraced this transformation with such passion and ambition as the Daughters of Gaia. Once a small, tight-knit religious community, the Gaians quickly opened their doors to all those who share their core values of nature worship and spreading life throughout the cosmos, with a particular eye for great talents of evolutionary science. While all those who join ...the Daughters rise to prominence based on their merit, the organization's unquestioned authority remains in the hands of one powerful family. Traditional worshippers hang on every word spoken by the Rose Queen Rebecca Freyja ORourke, whose clerical lineage spans centuries. Her husband, Imperial War Minister Zhou Xi Wang-mu Lee, lays the groundwork to enact her interstellar vision. But while Rebecca and Zhou typically remain to oversee recently hominized worlds, they send their daughter, Vicereine Alana Freyja Lee, to lay claim to new worlds and lead the terraforming process from scratch. Groomed for leadership from birth, and perhaps a more fervent disciple of Gaian theology than even her own mother, Alana has overseen the evolution of many a world from barren, inhospitable rubble to verdant paradise. Not merely followers or fundamentalists, Gaian governors count among their ranks talented explorers, as well as experts in genetics, biochemistry, and organic architecture. Many never would have predicted they'd fall in with a religious crowd, but were ultimately drawn in by the leaders' commitment to shaping the cosmos to fit the needs of an expanding human dominion. The Rose Queen urges serenity in the face of those who would deny progress through violent means, for the world will soon see her truth a planet is not a rock to keep hidden behind glass, but a seed just waiting to blossom.

Last week, astronomers from around the world announced that by comparing their observations, they have confirmed the discovery of the most massive explosion ever recorded, in a galaxy cluster about 390 million light years from Earth. How massive was this eruption? According to Simona Giacintucci of Washington DC's Naval Research Lab, the 'crater' left behind in the hot gas of the cluster could fit 15 Milky Way galaxies! The source of this anomaly is thought to be a supermassi...ve black hole contained within a large galaxy at the center of a string of galaxies, known as the Opiuchus cluster. A curved edge observed by NASA's Chandra X-Ray Observatory in 2016 was theorized to represent a cavity in the cluster's hot gas created by a jet of energy expelled from the black hole. This was dismissed as unlikely due to the unprecedented amount of energy such a large cavity formation would require, but the original theory has now been proven true! This explosion beat a previous record holder for energy output by five times, and while such a discovery is most exciting, astronomers are eager to learn more about the processes causing the eruption through multiwavelength observations. Will they find that worlds were lost in this energy outburst, or is it possible something could emerge from it? Image Credit X-ray Chandra NASA/CXC/NRL/S. Having overcome tremendous ecological crises on Earth through unprecedented international cooperation after the Sundering, the UNSA has consolidated its political power and cemented itself as the organization most firmly devoted not just to humankind's survival, but also to its prosperity and peace of mind. As a result, representatives from communities and across the world have flocked to the political body, bringing with them deep knowledge of the needs of those seeking a ne...w life outside of Earth's orbit. While Secretary-General David Munoz represents the friendly face of the organization, and General Buzz Sullivan its strong military arm, those who've had a peek behind the curtain know that it is Layla al-Battani, the UNSA's long-serving Deputy Chief of Staff, who has laid the groundwork and pulled the strings to make their vision a reality. Quietly lauded by political experts for her work enforcing economic and environmental justice across nations, al-Battani is also responsible for the recent rapid growth of the UNSA's governor program, bringing many like-minded public figures into her inner circle. Whether community organizers, traditional military paragons, or experts in the medical sciences, the governors of the newly interstellar UNSA coalition seek to build up and populate massive settlements on new worlds, with equality and continued scientific advancement as their foundation. While many less scrupulous experts are drawn to the fast-paced culture of private industry, Layla and her staff know the corrosive impact of greed, and refuse to repeat the mistakes which once put their home planet on the edge of ruin! For the UNSA doesn't simply seek to conquer a new world... they hope to build a better one, for all.

NASA TECHNOLOGY HIGHLIGHT Among the coolest of current spacefaring technologies are miniature satellites known as CubeSats. Typically weighing less than 10 kg and measuring no bigger than a briefcase, these nanosatellites, developed at Cal Poly and Stanford University in 1999, are composed of standardized interconnecting units, and thanks in part to small consumer electronics, are capable of scientific feats once considered possible only by using larger, bulkier hardware. Cu...beSats are already helping NASA's Artemis program strive for its goals, including putting humans on the Moon once again by 2024. One notable CubeSat mission to the Moon is the Lunar Flashlight. Expected to tag along with the Space Launch Systems Exploration Mission-1 launch late this year, this tiny spacecraft will set out to map the lunar south pole, keeping a special eye out for ice deposits which could one day, as liquid water, be used to facilitate a lunar base! Today we remember the vital contributions of Katherine Johnson, the NASA mathematician and human "computer" who calculated the trajectory of the first human in space, and of Project Apollo's Lunar Lander. She passed away today at the age of 101, but she leaves behind a legacy of mathematical achievement that helped put men on the moon, and paved the way for future space exploration. Rest in peace, Ms. Johnson, and thank you not least for your advocacy work towards providing STEM education for the next generation of brilliant women and men who will reach for the stars! The rapid increase of The Horizon Corporation's extrasolar holdings has necessitated an equally rapid workforce expansion, leading founder and CEO Appolo Matiba to seek out exceptional talent that understands how to turn a new paradise into profit. From corporate bigwigs, to new media experts, to young business savants, the governors hired to oversee Horizon's assets all understand one thing the unstoppable power of credits. While many academics feel strongly that the work o...f planetary development should be designed to favor those poorer inhabitants seeking refuge from Earth's excesses, Matiba contends that his company's fast and well-funded approach is the only realistic terraforming solution, and he has taken steps to keep these decisions out of the hands of government bureaucrats for future generations, with the help of his eccentric daughter Vivica and brilliant granddaughter-turned-protege Nubia. Such is Horizon's power in terraforming circles while many continue to question the corporation's self-serving outlook, all must admit that they get the job done.

In 1995, astronomers detected a shift in the wavelength emitted by the star 51 Pegasi, and concluded that an orbiting planet, 51 Pegasi b, was tugging at the star at regular intervals. Radial velocity, also known as the "wobble method," kicked off the "classical" period of planet hunting in the late 90s, helping to locate hundreds of planets before being supplanted by an even more effective approach, the transit method. This more modern method of observing a star's light when a planet crosses in front of it has uncovered thousands of planets since its first discovery in 2002.

An advanced radio telescope in Canada known as CHIME recently began detecting a "fast radio burst" emanating from a spiral galaxy 500 million light-years away, which repeats itself like clockwork every 16 days. Experts have stated that the FRB is unlikely to be alien in nature, instead suggesting that the anomaly may originate from a celestial body that is being obstructed at regular intervals. If astronomers manage to isolate the source, will it prove to be a find of great scientific value? What could it be? Image Credit CSIRO/Andrew Howells

An exoplanet is any planet outside of solar system, and there are multiple methods of detecting their presence in the grand void of space. While some orbit around pulsars or exist in otherwise harsh conditions, an exoplanet orbiting a Sun-like star is an extremely valuable find. How did astronomers first accomplish this feat?

We're hoping to add even more in the future, so stay tuned! Next up, this week marks the official launch of The Science of TerraGenesis podcast! This is chance to give back to the fans who have enjoyed TerraGenesis's focus on real science, by exploring it further and doing a deep-dive into what would really be involved in settling and terraforming a planet like Mars. There are three episodes available already, and we'll be releasing new episodes every Wednesday. Check it out and subscribe on iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher, or YouTube, and please leave us a 5-star review, it really does help us get new viewers and continue making episodes. Check out the podcast links here Link And finally, I am SO happy to be able to announce the official launch date of TerraGenesis on Windows Tuesday, February 11th! We've been working hard to get it ready for its third platform, and we're finally almost there. Be sure to sign up to get notified when it officially becomes available here Link As usual, I want to give a huge thank-you to all the people who have supported us through the game, through YouTube and the podcast, through Patreon, through buying hoodies and t-shirts on website, and everywhere else. This week, NASA says farewell to the Spitzer Space Telescope, an orbiting spacecraft responsible for 16 years of amazing discoveries, including the TRAPPIST-1 system. This telescope, following an Earth-trailing orbit since its launch in August of 2003, spied the ultra-cool red dwarf star in early 2017, with the help of the ground-based TRAPPIST telescope for which it was named. Spitzer also discovered seven Earth-size exoplanets orbiting TRAPPIST-1, the most terrestrial plane...ts ever found in a single star system! And as if that record weren't enough, it is also the greatest number of potentially habitable planets found around a single star, for all seven planets, particularly the three in the "habitable zone," could contain liquid water under the right atmospheric conditions. We wish Spitzer bon voyage and give thanks for its amazing legacy, while looking forward to the great discoveries sure to come from the James Webb Space Telescope, expected to launch next year! Did you picture your Martian and Ganymedian inhabitants breathing comfortably in homes made of fiberglass and steel? Well, that pesky NASA is here to challenge your image of the future with huts made of fungus! The Ames Research Center has prototyped building materials woven from mycelia, the vegetative part of a fungus, which have a higher bend strength than reinforced concrete, and are capable of growing and repairing themselves by simply adding water. This myco-architectur...e project envisions a future in which compact, lightweight materials made of dormant fungi make the long journey to Mars, before growing into fully functional human habitats capable of shielding astronauts from the pre-terraformed environment! Do these awesome fungus huts sound like they would appeal more to The Daughters of Gaia, or The Sons of Hephaestus? Image credit NASA/Ames Research Center/Lynn Rothschild

Uh oh... have you checked on your planets lately? Well, while such an event is unlikely to happen in TerraGenesis, NASA's SOFIA mission has discovered even more evidence that two planets in the BD +20 307 system may have indeed collided fairly recently. This evidence comes in the form of warm dust swirling around the double-star system, the kind that may come as the result of extreme impact between two exoplanetary bodies. Scientists also speculate that such a collision event in solar system's past may have led to the forming of Moon, and this recent discovery may help us build a more complete picture of own systems history! Yes, Kepler-186f, discovered in the spring of 2014, orbits its star at the same distance Mercury orbits Sun. But because Kepler-186 is only half the size of the Sun, at its relative orbit, Kepler-186f may be capable of naturally sustaining life, depending on its composition! Just a year later, NASA also discovered Kepler-452b, a near-Earth-size planet in nearly the same orbit of another G2-type star! Could one of these planets make for an ideal base of interstellar settlement?

Shortly after quiz on potentially habitable planets went live, auspicious news came down from NASA! Just over 100 light-years away, the agency's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) discovered its first Earth-size planet in its star's habitable zone. Coined TOI 700 d, this planet is roughly 20% larger than Earth, and because it exists in the zone where liquid water may form on its surface, it may also be capable of sustaining life! TOI 700 d is tidally locked, mea...ning one side is stuck in perpetual daylight while the other is completely dark. Additionally, without more surface-level information, scientists have been tasked with modeling over a dozen potential environments to find if any would result in parameters suitable for habitability. We must hope that one of the optimistic models proves true, and push exploration potential forth so that we might all get an up close look at TOI 700 d's surface one day! Some years ago, NASA discovered a planet via telescope which orbits its star at a distance where liquid water might naturally pool on its surface, the first such discovery. Do you know what it's called? NOTE A different Earth-like planet was later discovered orbiting a different star more similar to Sun, but THIS planet was discovered first, inhabiting a miniature solar system the size of Mercury's orbit.
