The space age is a time of radical transformation. From the first settlements on Mars to expansion beyond the belt, stubborn humanity has had to grapple with countless new realities. Many advances have been embraced as necessary or beneficial, but there are still those perspectives on the fringe of normal society. At the fore of one such discipline, genetic alteration, proudly stands Zora Ikhwezi Michel, a Gaian researcher far ahead of her time and outside most observers' com

As the Sons of Hephaestus grew, they gained a reputation as a bunch of spaceborne frontiersman, roughing it in remote reaches outside the bounds of UNSA law where only hardened survivors dared go. While the Hephaestians were happy to take all manner of followers, they did often settle in extreme locales marked by uncontrolled temperature shifts or radiation. This meant those traveling alongside Rex Jansson required a level of devotion which eclipsed concerns for their own well-being. One such ardent devotee is Gwynn Badejo, a foremost expert in safeguarded habitation designs.Badejo was born in a refugee settlement on Mercury, in the early days of mass migration when living in a hab shelter was a serious risk. He was born with albinism, meaning he would be more susceptible to skin cancer with greater exposure to sunlight. He was forced to leave Mercury with his mother, who found work as an engineer in a mining commune on Mars. She taught Gwynn her trade, and he began innovating on these concepts from an early age with hope in his heart to one day return to the rest of his family.Soon enough, miners began spreading Te Hau Arataki's literature, and rumors began to swirl of a movement to turn her words into action. His mother mostly disregarded these treatises, but Gwynn took to them as he had to his studies, enamored with the notion of preserving the distinct natural beauty of every planet rather than shaping it to fit a homogenous vision. When Rex Jansson himself visited the area, he immediately recognized Gwynn's talent and spoke to him as an equal. Despite his mother's protests, he made the painful decision to travel with Jansson further out into space, to help build independent stations for the Sons of Hephaestus.Badejo quickly became an invaluable asset, fitting right in with the Sons' army of engineers and excelling at the construction of habs safe from extreme temperatures and radiation. And while he still pines to reunite with his family so near to the Sun, he knows that time will arrive on its own. Until then, he is proof that there is a home for anyone among the Hephaestians willing to use their gifts to build a safer life for everyone.

The scientific advancement to propel humanity into space required a new level of creative problem solving, and some innovators entered the early space age quite well equipped. Even as a young girl, Etta Thitapura saw beyond outmoded ideas and found connections between disciplines which, as she came of age, led to multiple technological breakthroughs. Beginning her career as a neonatal specialist, which first brought her into contact with fellow trailblazer Yvonne Genet, Etta soon branched out into such diverse fields as networking, holographics, and rocket propulsion. She finally determined that with all of these inventions to her name it may be time to incorporate, and thus Infinity Industries was founded. As a CEO, Thitapura soon found that all the time spent building the Infinity brand took away from the study and experimentation that she loved. What's more, she found a formidable business rival in Horizon CEO Appolo Matiba, and while their competitive rapport led to a sort of tenuous friendship, this only added to the strain Etta felt focusing on profit over invention. The resource needs of an interplanetary megacorp, and the maneuvers to prevent Horizon from declaring a monopoly over all spacefaring tech, exhausted her to the point she considered selling her company to Matiba. She saw in the contract, though, that this would make all her patents proprietary to Horizon, meaning they would be kept from the public unless deemed profitable.Determined to seek a solution which favored public access to her inventions, Thitapura reconnected with Dr. Genet, who put her in touch with the leaders of the UNSA. Layla al-Battani proposed that if she came to work for them, the UNSA would provide public funds to make vital Infinity Industries tech available as a service. Eager to pursue this plan and return to the lab, Etta sold off the physical assets of her company while giving her patents to the UNSA. As a result, such inventions as zero G nurseries, exotic microbial vaccinations, and surface-to-orbit holographic comms found their way into common use on all planets, and Thitapura found happiness as the UNSA's Chief Technological Strategist.

Within a few centuries, the efforts of private enterprise and a united Earth government had turned Mars into a paradise rivaling the planet which had birthed humanity. The Martian population exploded into the millions, forging their own unique culture and history, and soon there was an entire generation who knew Earth only as a blue dot in the sky. This shift concerned history professor Frank M. Srikar, in spite of the achievement it signified. He knew, despite making his own permanent home on Mars, that humanity had much farther to go, and for that, they'd need to understand how far they'd come. With the rapid growth of Mars' cities came a need for education, so the UNSA created an endowment to bring teachers and their families from Earth. Frank became one of Mars' earliest historians, and took great stock of everything he witnessed, including the history of the ships which had brought them there, the evolution of terraforming technology, and the unique biology of the Martian flora. He passed all this down to his students, who over the years went from being first, to second, to third-generation Martians. When he noticed they had stopped referring to Mars as the Red Planet, Srikar knew a bold approach to sharing the past with these space-age children was needed. He approached the UNSA once again, this time seeking a grant to found a historical institute dedicated to the past, present, and future of Mars, and the widening view of solar system. This think tank would bring together explorers, settlers and terraforming experts who could shed a light on the short history of inhabited Mars, as well as guest speakers from Earth to share first-hand accounts of changes to humanity's homeworld. At the core of his mission statement, Srikar sought to educate students with the knowledge of centuries past, in order to then inspire them to reach further into the cosmos for the sake of future generations. The Beyond Mars Institute is now one of the UNSA's most storied organizations, and has given rise to legions of innovators with an eye towards history, inspired by Frank M. Srikar's credo that one must know where they came from to know where they're going.
