NASA's MAVEN spacecraft, sent to orbit Mars back in 2013, discovered a unique aurora on the Red Planet back in 2016. New results announced last week confirm that the ultraviolet event occurs routinely, and can help scientists track water loss from Mars' atmosphere! MAVEN's mission is to uncover how Mars lost much of its atmosphere and water, transforming from what's believed to have at one time been a watery planet capable of supporting life into the inhospitable rock we know... today. This newly investigated aurora stems from the hydrogen of what was once Martian water, and all that water is sadly now being lost to space. With this research, could future terraformers also calculate the ideal means of bringing water back to the surface of Mars? We must continue to dream! Image Credit NASAs Goddard Space Flight Center

Look to the skies, Terraformers! The Geminid meteor shower began its peak late last night, and sightings will remain frequent through tonight, particularly for those in the Northern Hemisphere. While the bright light of the nearly full moon will somewhat hinder this year's viewing, those observing clear skies may spot up to 30 meteors per hour! Have you seen the cosmic debris cross your sky? Let us know about it in the comments! Image Credit NASA/Bill Dunford

Those who answered "C Photosphere," you are correct! This is the layer that emits the light we can normally see from Earth, while the corona, the Sun's extensive aura, is visible ONLY during a solar eclipse, or with the use of a coronagraph. Interestingly, at a max temperature of 6200 degrees Celsius, the photosphere is actually cooler than the scorching corona! Thank goodness Parker Solar Probe came prepared.

Parker Solar Probe, the closest spacecraft to Sun, has gathered fascinating new data about solar activity from within the star's corona! Since it launched last year, Parker has made a series of passes through the Sun's scalding atmosphere, and has used its uniquely resilient instruments to measure electric and magnetic fields, particles in solar winds, and other cosmic phenomena within the inhospitable environment. This new information will hopefully aid NASA not just in understanding the Sun's unique properties, but in developing ways to shield future astronauts and spacefaring technologies as they operate under more extreme conditions far from Earth! The first steps towards terraforming Mercury, perhaps? Image Credit NASA/Johns Hopkins APL

Last week, an international research team discovered sugar compounds inside two carbon-rich meteorites, including ribose, a crucial component of RNA. This supports the theory that ingredients for planetary life can emerge in asteroids, and that pieces of those asteroids which fell to Earth may even have carried with them the origin of life on planet! Is it possible that the secret to fostering new life on other planets already exists in the depths of space? Let's hope so! Image Credit NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center Conceptual Image Lab

Flash meteor shower alert! Late tonight, the alpha Monocerotids, irregular showers last seen in 1995, are expected to streak across the sky at a possible rate of 400 meteors per hour! Sadly, the showers will only be visible in parts of Europe and the eastern and southern United States where skies are clear. The show starts around 04:15 UTC (23:15 EST), so if you are fortunate enough to catch a magnificent glimpse, be sure to share it with the TerraGenesis community!

NASA scientists have confirmed the presence of water vapor above the surface of Europa, shot into space in huge geysers from the moon's surface. This supports the supposition that a vast subterranean ocean (possibly double the size of Earth's oceans!) is hidden beneath its icy surface. Now if NASA could just confirm a foolproof way to extract that water without flooding your cities when the heat gets turned up... Have you successfully terraformed this icy moon of Jupiter?

Terraformers, tomorrow is your last chance to see wee Mercury pass in front of the Sun until the year 2032! While the already progressing transit won't be visible until morning in certain parts of the world, the planet will reach the midway of its journey around 15:20 UTC. One year ago, NASA's Voyager 2 followed in the footsteps of its partner probe, and passed beyond the edge of the 'heliosphere,' a bubble of particles and magnetic fields created by Sun which shields us from the cosmic radiation of interstellar space! Floating beyond the 'cosmic shoreline,' the line where the heliosphere ends and interstellar space begins (about 11 billion miles from Earth!), Voyager 2 discovered dramatic changes in particle density and the rate of cosmic rays, confirming many of Voyager 1's findings from a different point of space in 2012. These expanded findings have been published in five new research papers in the journal Nature Astronomy, and will likely shape image of space beyond the solar system for years to come! Imagine what else the Voyager twins, and future probes, may uncover...

Look upwards tonight, Terraformers, as the Southern Taurids meteor shower reaches its peak visibility! With a fair amount of patience, even a novice observer of the night sky can see 5 or more meteors per hour depending on their location. The origin of these meteors will appear to stem from the constellation Taurus, but they will dance across the sky in every direction. Let us know if you see any tonight or have in the past!

US Navy officials confirmed this week that images shared by To The Stars Academy do in fact feature Unidentified Aerial Phenomena. Tom Delonge, founder of both blink-182 and To The Stars, is the mastermind behind this revelation and government admittal. However, for this to have happened days before the "Area 51 raid" likely fueled the desire for some to travel to the base. So tell us, Terraformers, did YOU make the trip? And what exactly do you think *all the small things* in those photos are?!
