Most spacefarers still have one particular world they call home, but there are some who have never known a home beyond the hull of a starship. Bom Pryde is one such traveler, a runaway discovered in the engine bay of an unregistered smuggling ship, studying the alignment of the thruster coils to keep her mind occupied. Figuring she'd be more trouble than she was worth, the crew considered shoving her out the airlock before realizing how much of the ship's systems she had lear...ned intuitively, and they instead offered her her first job. Years later, while working with a more scrupulous crew aboard a freighter bearing Soletta components to Saturn, the life support system of Pryde's ship suffered a catastrophic failure. Backup generators aboard the Farasi managed to preserve oxygen flow and nutrient reserves, but no temperature regulation meant that the heat venting into space would soon leave the vessel's inhabitants frozen solid. While the rest of the crew huddled together under blankets, Pryde executed a 31-hour solo spacewalk, repurposing their cargo on-the-fly into a new thermal distribution system which redirected waste heat from the Farasi's drive cone back into the ship's interior. When she re-entered the airlock her crewmates had all fallen unconscious, so she administered first aid for another six hours until enough had awoken to get the ship to Titan. Upon arrival, though, Pryde was met with a harsh welcome as her Gaian clients reprimanded her for the "reckless misuse" of their cargo. After quitting on the spot Pryde found herself in a cantina having a quiet drink alone, and was approached by an ancient Polynesian woman with a quiet voice and sharp eyes. Word had quickly spread about an ingenious new method of heating ships for long-haul voyages, she said, and the old stranger had more than a few questions for the talented engineer. They talked all night in that cantina, sharing stories of adventures and inventions and frustrations past and present, and by morning Bom Pryde had shipped out with a brand new crew, the newest member of the Sons of Hephaestus.

Earlier this week, an international team of astronomers led by Professor Jane Greaves of Cardiff University identified a toxic and flammable gas known as phosphine high up within Venus clouds. What surprised them was that this rare molecular compound should not be present in the first place, given the planets hellish and unfavorable conditions. Additionally, this lethal substance can only be manufactured artificially by humans or produced naturally by microbes dwelling in s...wamps, marshes, and sometimes animal guts, leading scientists to question its source. Skeptics label the teams findings controversial as they have not yet been verified by NASA, but the observations which have been submitted to the journal Nature Astronomy have opened up the possibility of aliens producing the deadly gas in Venus atmosphere. Some scientists suggest that the microbial production of phosphine is highly unlikely due to the planets blistering temperatures, acidic clouds, and tremendous amounts of pressure which would instantly annihilate all, if not most life-forms. Greaves and her team have quite a bit of work to do to confirm life on Venus, but remain excited and hopeful in sending a space probe to planets twin for future investigations. Until then, where do Terraformers stand? Do you believe that extraterrestrial life-forms are floating in Venus clouds? Let us know your thoughts down below! Image Credits ESO/M. Kornmesser/L. The successful hominization of Mars led to a mass migration not unlike the American gold rush. Because no one entity could lay claim to the entire planet's surface, land claims exploded, many of them overlapping and legally questionable. Such disputes might have risked plunging the inner solar system into all-out war before wider expansion could even begin were it not for skilled mediators tasked with keeping the peace, among whom the most sought-after and trusted was Yusuf M...ardin. Mardin first earned his reputation as an arbitrator in his birthplace of Kabul, settling all manner of disagreements from grazing rights to post-conflict grievances. As part of his process, he insisted that each side in a dispute "confess their transgressions," taking ownership of the missteps that brought about the conflict so that each could be forgiven before the resolution was reached. Many proud Afghanis were resistant to Mardin's mediation style, but his practice brought about tangible results as his neighbors forged a permanent peace, and spacefaring factions seeking their own peaceful coexistence took notice. Settling land disputes on Mars was a completely different challenge for Mardin, as centuries of war-torn history were replaced with newly arrived settlers bickering over largely uncharted expanses of rock, often purchased from disreputable parties. In settling such matters, he prioritized the needs of poor settlers and refugees over powerful organizations that would seek to exploit them, helping create a legal framework for land owning based on stewardship of newly habitable planets that has stood to this day. His decisions earned the ire of many factions, but the Far-Future Institute took an admiring view of Mardin's precise deliberations, and offered him a leadership role which would allow the spread of his social science teachings far beyond Mars. Mardin weighed his acceptance of this role as carefully as he would any argument, and agreed to sign on with the FFI so long as he would remain free to work alongside any faction, free from their influence, to resolve any dispute which might otherwise devolve into system-wide bloodshed.

The Indian Space Research Organization launched the Chandrayaan-1 orbiter with NASAs Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3) instrument on board back in 2008 to confirm the presence of frozen water on the Moon. Much to their surprise, the spacecrafts findings proved that not only did Earths natural satellite bore water ice in its polar regions, but also revealed that the Moons surface had an abundance of mineral deposits. Team members guiding NASAs Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO)... unearthed another shocking secret two months ago with the detection of iron metals lurking beneath the Moons lunar plains. Scientists are now baffled once again with the recent discovery of hematite - a form of rust, dependent on oxygen and water - on airless Moon. A paper published by a team of researchers, led by Shuai Li of the University of Hawaii, provides some clues as to why the Moon is rusting. First, they reasoned Earths magnetic field has been funneling traces of oxygen from its upper atmosphere to the Moon, which would explain the presence of O2. The second missing link is solar wind which drives hydrogen particles to planet and the Moon. So how could the Moon cultivate hematite if it is blasted with a chemical element that prevents iron from oxidizing? Scientists proposed that because Earths magnetic field blocks 99% of solar wind during the Moons full moon phase, rust can freely form during that time. The last concern pertains to rust forming when most of the Moon lacks moisture. The team determined that fast-moving dust particles, carrying water molecules, pummel the Moon and mix in with iron in the soil. The heat from these impacts also speeds the process of oxidation. Of course, so much is still based on speculation, but these researchers plan to continue their investigations for more evidence. Will their future findings validate their hypotheses? As mankind's interplanetary dominion expands and new worlds become livable, incredible opportunities become available for all those with the means to seize them. But in the wake of such rapid change, even people with a mind for progress can forget about those less fortunate who are forcibly displaced, or simply left behind. Luckily for the remaining denizens of Earth, they have a tireless advocate in Johanna Longhair of the UNSA. Longhair, of the Ute people of the Great Basin..., came of age at the apex of the environmental ravages of the Sundering. From her home in Utah, she watched helplessly as the final drops of the Great Salt Lake dried up and forest fires ravaged the region, forcing residents further west towards a rapidly rising coastline. As Martian and lunar settlements began to grow, many without the means to leave Earth became trapped as those means became even slimmer. And while new scientific innovations emerged to curb the Sundering's impact, Longhair knew that millions of lives could still be lost in the interim unless someone stepped up to bring their indignation to bear on those who held all the power. She decided to become that person herself, and thus quickly became the public face of the downtrodden across her world. Through her civic research and impassioned oratory, Longhair and the UNSA finalized a series of public initiatives known as the Nuchi-u Accords. They stipulated that any governmental assistance going towards planetary settlement must be met with matching funds for post-Sundering redevelopment. They established points of contact with many organizations representing impoverished communities who could benefit from Earth-bound terraforming initiatives. And, crucially, they mandated that UNSA efforts to send settlers to new worlds could not discriminate on any basis including race, gender or creed, and must prioritize those forcibly displaced by man-made disasters. Apart from occasional interplanetary trips to act as a UNSA representative, Longhair has chosen to remain on Earth and personally ensure that her accords are followed to the letter, much to the chagrin of those who oppose her "people first" agenda.

Far beyond the bounds of solar system lurk infinite celestial bodies, still yet to be discovered. Recently, a team of astronomers volunteering for Backyard Worlds Planet 9, a NASA-funded citizen project, stumbled upon 95 brown dwarfs (objects as large as planets, but smaller than stars) in solar systems backyard. The worldwide network of nearly 100,000 professional and non-professional scientists had previously found over 1,500 of these cold worlds by sorting thro...ugh datasets harvested from NASAs Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and other previous missions and facilities. Their newest discovery of 95 additional brown dwarfs is another remarkable achievement, as it is the largest sample of such objects found through a citizen-fueled project. In 2014, NASA identified WISE 0855, the coldest-known brown dwarf to ever exist. Its freezing temperature has led researchers to believe that WISE 0855 could be a rogue exoplanet, though the latest findings of Backyard Worlds offer a new perspective. The newly identified brown dwarfs have relatively low temperatures, suggesting they are light-years away from solar system and are sheltered from the Suns heat. Larger brown dwarfs with temperatures reaching up to a thousand degrees Fahrenheit are easier to detect, indicating they are much closer to us than previously thought. The findings of Backyard Worlds have made it possible for scientists to draw important connections between WISE 0855 and other brown dwarf populations. Additionally, the project proves that members of the public can play an important role in reshaping scientific understanding of solar neighborhood, says Aaron Meisner, lead author of the brown dwarf study. So Terraformers, interested in joining their search for new worlds? Who knows what you might discover? Image Credits NOIRLab/NSF/AURA/P. Marenfeld

The scientific community is often criticized for lacking leadership. Among the brilliant minds timidly vying for grants and wishing only to pursue the task of experimentation, there are too few willing to fight for funding in perpetuity, or to extol the virtues of free science to a room full of skeptics. His willingness to stand before the cameras and present the case for pure innovation is what made Keahi Malae the most logical choice for next Director of the Far-Future Inst...itute, at just 38 years old. Few know that Malae was actually aboard the International Space Station on the fateful day that Olivia Stein put her Soletta prototype to the test. He was a mere research fellow at the time, and when Stein departed unceremoniously after suggesting that the tech be tested on Mercury, most assumed that the proposed project would simply fade into the ether of noble impracticality. What no one expected was that Malae, driven by his excitement for this technological marvel, would manage to pass that excitement on to powerful investors, and ultimately be selected to lead a new effort to stabilize Mercury's extreme temperature. His proficiency with predicting hypothetical scenarios and countering them was matched only by his infectious enthusiasm for the project, which rallied his research team to heed his every directive and, ultimately, achieve the first step in making Mercury as habitable as Mars has become. Since the victory in inner solar system which propelled him to his current leadership position, Malae has set his sights on worlds far beyond the asteroid belt, and what advances it would take to make the journey to such planets achievable without being a one-way trip. To answer such questions, he has led the largest recruitment effort the FFI has seen in a generation, beginning with the celebrated Dr. Stein. Together with the most gifted and creative minds of the terraforming age, Malae hopes to bring about a new era of enlightenment in which spacefaring humans look beyond the traditions of the past and the needs of the present, toward a brighter, more wondrous future.

An SUV-sized asteroid known as 2020 QG achieved the closest flyby ever recorded early last week. It flew past Earth over the Indian Ocean at a tremendous speed of 27,600 mph, just missing planet by a mere distance of 1,830 miles. The discovery stunned astronomers as the car-sized rock was not detected until six hours later, having already passed by. Luckily, the near-Earth object (NEO) did not pose a serious threat to planet. Its comparatively small size suggests it w...ould not have caused any serious damage even if it was on an impact trajectory. Additionally, 2020 QG would have been broken up by Earths atmosphere as it transformed into a fireball, a common event that happens several times a year, according to NASA. Still an incredibly close call and worrisome, indeed. Another tiny asteroid called 2018VP1, measuring approximately 6.5 feet in diameter, is expected to make its way towards Earth in early November, but analysts at NASAs Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) say, there is no need for any immediate concern since the odds of it crashing are incredibly low. What is unsettling, though, is that so many objects in planets vicinity often remain out of sight, so who knows what potentially dangerous things exist in blind spot? With that being said, how do you feel about 2020QGs near miss? Comment your thoughts down below! Image Credits NASA/JPL-Caltech

The core message of the Daughters of Gaia, that it is the duty of mankind to bring barren worlds into full bloom across solar system and beyond, grabs at the hearts of many thousands of followers all on its own. But to truly enliven the imagination, and to stir the passions of a mass movement of terraformers and avid supporters, nothing beats the power of music. And fortunately for the Gaians, they have harnessed unrivaled star power with the endorsement of Miguel Akna He...nriquez Seplveda, the voice of a new generation. Embracing the performer lifestyle at just 16, Miguel's earliest explorations of music harnessed a retro style, making use of the string and percussive instruments of a bygone era, when spaceflight was still new and the solar system full of potential. But as his popularity on Earth grew with hits like "Starchild" and "Ingrvida Noche", Miguel began to pursue a more progressive sound, one that could perhaps only be found outside of Earth. He began a pilgrimage to various inner solar system locales in order to experiment with low gravity instrumentation, and to capture the natural sounds of worlds coming alive for the first time. It was during these travels that he became acquainted with the Daughters of Gaia, and while not a spiritual person by nature, the poetic whimsy of their core philosophy made Miguel a true terraforming believer, and he vowed to do what he could to inspire more. Miguel's alliance with the Gaians is what ultimately led to his greatest musical achievement the Bring the Heat music tour, which began on Earth but carried a die-hard fandom of thousands on a years-long journey to Jupiter, to concerts on all four major moons ending with Ganymede, the Gaians' main target of public interest. The epic concert was broadcast across the solar system, and is largely credited with drawing funding and sentiment towards the eventual terraforming of Ganymede. Everyone remembers where they were when Miguel performed "Underneath the Ice" to close his tour, and hundreds who saw it live chose to remain and see the Gaians' work done alongside him, if only to be blessed with more of his music as Ganymede began to come alive.

Jupiter, solar systems largest planet, holds countless secrets about its own history which scientists have sought to unveil for centuries. NASAs latest Juno mission revealed that Jupiter is home to what are called shallow lightning and mushballs (slushy ammonia-rich hailstones). Previous missions had compelled scientists to believe that Jupiters electrical storms closely resembled those of Earths. However, the space probes findings display something entirely diff...erent. Unlike Earths thunderstorms, where water exists in liquid, gaseous, and solid states, Jupiters smaller and shallower flashes occur at extremely high altitudes, too cold for water to exist in pure liquid form. Additionally, jet streams fling water-ice crystals high above Jupiters rain clouds where they engulf traces of ammonia, creating a new ammonia-water solution that does not exist in native planets clouds. Unfortunately for NASA scientists, Jupiters deadly combination of extreme pressure, freezing temperatures, and high voltage Earth-sized storms would instantly destroy any spacecraft before it could conduct a more thorough investigation. Will we ever get the chance to send a manned spacecraft into the upper atmosphere of this gigantic, complex world? Let us know your thoughts down below. As the single largest corporate entity in human history, the Horizon Corporation has very high standards for its public image. Employees at every level are expected to maintain a clean, professional, and controversy-free reputation, and billions of dollars are spent every year cultivating a brand that is above reproach. But if you've frequented any upscale boutique in Elysium or read any tabloid on Earth, you will know there is one woman to whom such rules simply do not apply... Vivica Matiba-Cavalcanti, known to her fans as VMC. The eldest daughter of Horizon's CEO Appolo Matiba, and mother to his rising-star granddaughter Nubia, Vivica is perhaps best known for her off-and-thrice-on-again marriage to titanium magnate Arturo Cavalcanti, a union which has produced more tabloid drama in a quarter century than most celebrity families do in generations. The list of enemies that Vivica refuses to be in the same room with, due to romances (real or imagined) with Arturo, stretches into triple digits. So beloved are her genetically-modified cheetah cubs that when they were refused entry to Mars due to eco-contamination concerns, the couple kept the pets on a private spacecraft orbiting the planet for the duration of their trip. Vivica recently reached a peak of infamy as the woman who slapped UNSA Admiral Malakai Folau on a live broadcast, after he questioned the need for private spacefaring contracts to supplement the UNSA fleet. In spite of all the spectacle, those who like to laugh at Vivica's public persona tend to underestimate a truly shrewd business mind. Her headline grabbing has only served to boost the power of her official brand, VMC, making her a fashion icon and her clothing the most sought-after across the inner solar system, and Vivica's position on the Horizon Board of Directors remains unquestioned. She is watchful and vigilant with all Horizon affairs, in ways that some deem ruthless, but others recognize as displaying an unflinching eye for profit. But whatever you may think of her, one thing is universally understood in life as in business, Vivica Matiba-Cavalcanti is a force of nature and no one ever knows what she will do next.

For over a decade NASAs Dawn spacecraft has provided scientists with snapshots of solar systems most bizarre places, including the Occator Crater, a massive impact site located on the dwarf planet Ceres, which resides in the main asteroid belt between Jupiter and Mars. Before its retirement, Dawn spent its last remaining fuel to input data and capture stunning images of bright regions on Ceres, leaving scientists with some clues to the mystery of how the strange world c...ame into existence and evolved. Earlier observations made by researchers in 2018 confirmed that the bright spots were closely associated with reflective sodium-carbonate deposits that formed as a result of salt water rising to the surface. Initially, scientists could not determine where the liquid originates, but after taking a closer look at Dawns records, they concluded that the liquid comes from a deep brine reservoir, hundreds of miles wide, tucked beneath Ceres surface. What is unusual is that current conditions on Ceres should cause salt water to quickly evaporate, but Dawns latest measurements reveal the presence of recent geologic activity and salt-bearing liquids. Consequently, scientists say these factors contribute to the idea of Ceres once supporting extraterrestrial life. So what do you think, Terraformers? Is a salty subsurface ocean enough evidence to prove aliens previously existed on this mysterious planet? Let us know in the comments! Image Credits NASA/JPL-Caltech/UCLA/MPS/DLR/IDA

Not many influencers in the last 400 years can claim to have conquered social media on Earth, let alone across the entire settled solar system. But while her meteoric rise to superstardom has made Faizah Kirmani a household name across multiple worlds, her self-described "Midas Touch" is perhaps her most defining trait, launching countless other brands beyond the stratosphere. Kirmani first entered the public eye as a cast member on the short-lived reality series "Elysium Lif...e." The show was bankrolled by the Horizon Corporation as part of a campaign to promote the newly-developed Martian beachside communities of Elysium Mons as a trendy new home for Earth's wealthy elite. But in a program otherwise defined by false drama and shameless materialism, what really stuck with viewers was the bright-eyed sweetness and genuine, playful joy of Faizah Kirmani, the youngest of the aspiring starlets. Her obvious star quality catapulted her into the spotlight, and before the end of Elysium's first and only season she had been signed as a spokesperson and influencer for the Horizon Corporation. From there Kirmani quickly rose to icon status with her own Horizon-sponsored fashion line, beauty products, awards hosting gigs, and the #1 trending livestream on the budding social media platform, Liftoff. Kirmani could have chosen to commit all her energy to the advancement of her own image, which would have made her sponsors at Horizon perfectly happy. But (as her adoring fans are never tired of mentioning) as part of her contract she demanded the autonomy to invest a significant portion of her time, and substantial Horizon resources, toward her passion projects. These included campaigns promoting equal access to space resettlement resources for low-income families, cutting-edge astronomy tech advances for every classroom on Earth and Mars, and chiefly, increased access to space-age engineering training for young girls, something Faizah never had but always wanted. While the limelight suits her just fine, the knowledge that her work is lifting a thousand new voices to the cosmos is what truly keeps Faizah smiling for the cameras.

After spending 62 days aboard the International Space Station, NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley safely returned back to Earth on Sunday afternoon. The SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft, appropriately named Endeavour, undocked from the stations Harmony module at 7:35 p.m. EDT on Saturday, August 1 and splashed down off the coast of Pensacola, Florida less than 24 hours later. Endeavours return trip is just as monumental as its launch from U.S. soil. Last year,... a test flight of the SpaceX Dragon revealed that its base could be roasted to a whopping 3,500 degrees Fahrenheit as it plummets through Earths atmosphere at intense speeds. But thankfully, the capsule was equipped with two sets of parachutes devised to slow down its rapid descent. Eventually, the spacecraft reached a gentle speed of 15 mph before touching down in the Gulf of Mexico, where a recovery ship retrieved it from the water and a medical team tended to the passengers. Before their departure from space, the pair had completed 1,024 orbits around Earth, traveled 27,147,284 statute miles, and conducted a number of scientific experiments designed to help us better understand the effects that we, as humans, have on planet. As for Endeavour, it will return back to SpaceXs Dragon Lair for data retrieval and multiple inspections. If meeting the requirements for NASAs certification process, the next Crew Dragon capsule will transport a four-person crew to the ISS in late September. Congratulations again to NASA and SpaceX on their huge accomplishments and welcome home, Bob and Doug! We are truly excited as their successful launch and return mark the beginning of a new era of commercial human spaceflight. Image Credits NASA/Bill Ingalls

Contrary to popular belief, the Sons of Hephaestus are not united as a single philosophical organization. Adherents to the teachings of Te Hau Arataki exist in a constellation of loosely affiliated groups, the majority of which are collectives of workers and machinists who act as non-violent advocates of the Planetary Purity movement. That being said, there are also those who choose to take the fight against terraforming in a more direct, dangerous direction, and the resultin...g chaos is where Zeke Pea feels most at home. Where Neil Jansson represents the clean-cut, just-folks, neighborly face of their campaign, Pea has become famous in his own right as the clenched fist of the Kaitiaki, the personal enforcer of the infamous Rex Jansson, leading black ops raids against terraforming installations throughout the solar system. These strikes have been condemned by many as terrorist attacks, while others hail Zeke and his fellow partisans as principled protectors of their homeland. His two most recognizable features among the masses are his facial scars, earned while leading a prison riot during a twelve-week stay in a Gaian interrogation facility, and his missing right arm, the story of which remains legend. The two most popular rumors among Hephaestian troops suggest that he either lost it by disabling a massive hydrogen processor with his bare hand, or that his environment suit was punctured at the start of a mission and he chose to let the arm go rather than scrub the op. Among the few who know of his volatile relationship with Pim Jansson, it's whispered that he may have lost it during one of their frequent (and oftentimes violent) rendezvous. Pea remains a fugitive at large, wanted for crimes against multiple nations on seven different worlds throughout the system. Even a handful of his ideological allies in the Sons have discussed the possibility of tracking him down and turning him in as a gesture of international goodwill. Not that such discussions ever made it very far too many of the Hephaestian hardliners still support him, and the rest are too scared of him to try.
