The answer to quiz is Carl Schlechter! He is the only player to have drawn Emanuel Lasker in a World Championship match (1910) during the latter's 27 year reign as the World Champion. The 1910 World Championship was a 10 game affair. Going into the 10th and final game, Schlechter was a point ahead of Lasker. However, Schlechter blundered and lost the final game. The match was tied, which meant Lasker got to retain his title. However, there is some confusion over whether S...chlechter had to win the match by a two-point margin and hence took serious risks in the mysterious 10th game. No contract for that World Championship match was ever found and we will probably never know if Schlechter had to win by a two-point margin or not. Today, GM Priyadharshan Kannappan takes you through a game by the great man as part of series 21 Gems of Chess. It's a victory over the American genius Frank Marshall! The answer to quiz from earlier today is James Mason! In the late 1870s, he was the #1 player in the world. In an article on Mason published in 1925, W.H.Watts labelled him as the 'finest player who ever lived'. Watts further went on to say, "If ever a player lived before his time, that man was Mason." Today, GM Priyadharshan Kannappan presents a game of this legendary figure as part of series 21 Gems of Chess! It's a brilliant victory over... another top player of that era - the great Amos Burn. Caruana, on being 1.5 points behind the leader Nepo Yeah, it's not a great situation. But still, we have pretty much an entire tournament to go. We have 8 rounds - that is normally like a full tournament. But 1.5 points is also a lot of ground to make up. (Source FIDE)
