Yet up until now, humans have only set foot on Earth and the Moon. But a future voyage to Mars initiated by the visionary multi-entrepreneur Elon Musk and his company SpaceX in the next five years seems increasingly more likely. Level up your astronomy game and gain more insight over everything related to the starry skies above us with app Redshift Sky, available on Google Play and the App Store.

So, what do you know about Neptune? Chances are not so much. Given its immense distance from Earth, Neptune remains a rather mysterious planetary companion. Being located roughly 30 times farther away from the Sun than Earth is, it only receives about 0.1 percent of the sunlight that we on earth are lucky to get. But the Big Blue Planet, as it is nicknamed, makes the most of this. The tiny bit of sunlight it does receive significantly affects its atmosphere, resulting... in a south pole with significantly warmer temperatures than elsewhere on the planet. As it turns out, Neptune also radiates about twice as much energy as it gets from the Sun, suggesting that it is home to a hot internal core. We love teaching you about all things in space . This time, we will brush up your Ancient Greek skills. Ready? The closest point of a bodys direct orbit around the sun is called perihelion. Peri means near, -helion refers to sun. If you wanted to talk about the nearest point of an objects orbit around another sun, it would be called periastron (obviously). Oh, and the farthest point would be called respectively aphelion or apastron. And if you want to talk about... both points, its called apsis (plural apsides). If you prefer to see aphelions and perihelions of other planets in the solar system, head on over to app Redshift Sky.

Whats green, on Mars, but not a Martian? Its the green glow! ESAs ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter recently found a green glow in the atmosphere around Mars. This glow is quite unusual; only Earth has something similar called night glow, which occurs because oxygen atoms emit a certain wavelength of light. You can only see it from an edge on perspective when you look at Earth from the ISS, for example.... The green glow around Mars seems to stem from oxygen atoms as well and has been predicted already 40 years ago. But there still needs to be a lot of research done on the behavior of oxygen. Green glow or not, you will always have a first-row seat for Mars with app Redshift Sky (available for iOS and Android).

Human bodies produce a lot of waste. On Earth, we have ways to deal with that. But what do you do with all the pee in space? ESA scientists might have a solution building moon bases. It sounds a bit disgusting and weird, but recent research shows that urea, the main compound of urine, would help with mixing lunar concrete to make it more malleable before it hardens into its final shape. Not only is this a great recycling concept, but the mixture also seems to be very strong... and easy to work with. We mentioned that we should keep eyes open for asteroids, not only because theyre an interesting object to study. The survival of the Earth might rely on us preventing future impacts. Like the one that probably happened near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in Russia on June 30, 1908. Were still not sure what exactly happened. One hypothesis is that an asteroid hit the area, flattening 80 million trees and causing a rumble that could be detected across Eurasia and as f...ar away as Washington, D.C. Thankfully, this object hit an uninhabited area, so no casualties were reported. Also, if you were wondering why Asteroid Day is on June 30, now you know . When was the last time you appreciated an asteroid? Definitely too long. In preparation of Asteroid Day on June 30, we like to hit you (see what we did there?) with some interesting facts about asteroids. Asteroids are basically mini-planets Just as planets, they orbit the Sun, but unlike them, their orbit is not disc-shaped. Theyre also smaller in size, although the larger ones are called planetoids. ... If you want to get a closer look at Ceres, Pallas, Juno, Vesta, or Astraea, or other asteroids check out app Redshift Sky available in Google Play- and App Stores .

When I grow up, I want to be an astronaut! While we didnt become astronauts, we hope to inspire others for astronomy and science with Redshift Sky app instead. Becoming an astronaut is not easy. You need to be a scientist or engineer and have excellent physical and psychological health. But you also need to embrace being in the public a lot. ESA lists it as one of the requirements. Tweeting from space, interviews, appearances on TV all part of an astronauts job... today. If youre more drawn to exploring rather than explaining space, we suggest using Redshift Sky.

Are you missing traveling as much as we do? We can only imagine visiting some tropical beach. But why stop there? Lets go interstellar! Visiting the nearest star first would be an option. So, lets get out sky maps (we recommend Redshift Sky) and plan for hypothetical trip. The closest star is the Sun, you might say. And, technically, youre correct, because the Sun is a star. But when were talking interstellar travel, the closest stars would be Proxima Centaur...i and Alpha Centauri A and B. Theyre only 4.22 and 4.3 lightyears from Earth. Basically, around the corner.

Usually, we give you facts on what we know about space. But today we only have something we dont know the origin of the Moon. The most common hypothesis is that a Mars-sized object slammed into the young Earth and catapulted huge amounts of debris into the Earths orbit, where it slowly formed into Moon. But new findings suggest that this might not be true. Scientists found so-called volatile carbon on the Moon. These volatiles only exist if temperatures stay below a... certain level. If the Moon was made from impact material, temperatures would have been so high that the volatile carbon would have boiled away. While we wait for scientists to come up with better explanations, you can check out the Moon on Redshift Sky.

Even without Martians exploring the Red Planet is still one of the most exciting endeavors of humankind. Before anybody sets foot on Mars, NASAs Rovers will do the groundwork. After Spirit, Opportunity and Curiosity the next rover to explore Mars will be called Perseverance and is set to launch in July 2020. Alex Mather, a Virginia seventh grader, came up with the name. In his submission to NASAs naming contest he writes If you think about it, all of these names of p...ast Mars rovers are qualities we possess as humans. Many people are still salty that Pluto has been demoted to dwarf planet (Let it go, please! Its been 15 years!). Other objects might be happy if they earned the title of dwarf planet like Hygiea. Hygiea always checked three of the four boxes for dwarf planet, namely it orbits around the Sun, its not a moon, and it has not cleared the neighborhood around its orbit like a full-sized planet. Just now we were able to check for the final criterion an (almost) spherical shap...e. Thanks to the VLT (Very Large Telescope), astronomers could see that this is the case. And another title might await Hygiea It could be the smallest dwarf planet in Solar System, even smaller than Ceres. So, go Hygiea, and congratulations! Its one small reclassification for man, but a great promotion for a former asteroid.

As we live on Earth, we consider a planet with a magnetic field as something normal. But even in Solar System its not that common of the rocky planets in the inner Solar System, only Earth and Mercury have one. And with Mercury, we are not sure why. Scientists considered Mercury too small to have a magnetic field, which is one hundred times weaker than that of Earth. One hypothesis is that, like Earths magnetism, Mercurys core must at least partially be molten. But... more data will hopefully be on the way ESAs and JAXAs BepiColombo mission is sending two orbiters to Mercury to find out more about its core. Estimated arrival is December 2025. When it comes to naming things in space, astronomers love using terms from Greek mythology. And we cant be mad at that; after all, mythology is a treasure-trove of imaginative creatures. Which is why it makes sense (kind of), to call Centaurs after the mythological mix of humans and horses. In astronomy, Centaurs are a hybrid between asteroid and a comet. The icy planetesimals can be found between Jupiter and Neptune. Since they cross the orbits of giant planets on... their path around the sun, their own orbits are rather wobbly. What objects classify as Centaurs is still up for debate; there are different criteria for Centaurs. But let this not deter you to discover more small Solar System bodies with Redshift Sky.

How do you feel today? Well rested? Or did you wake up feeling like a zombie, in desperate need of brains? In space, you might not wake up feeling like a zombie, but you sleep like one. As gravity even in Earths orbit is considerably lower than on Earth, your arms tend to float up, leaving astronauts in the zombie sleeping position. To avoid that you would have to strap your arms to your sleeping bag, which is probably too uncomfortable for a good nights sleep. How ...about space discovery from your own bed? app Redshift Sky works great

Have you ever seen a solar eclipse? For most people, it is a once in a lifetime event. Except that this is not the whole truth Every year, about three to five solar eclipses occur. However, most of them are either partial eclipses, i.e. the Moon only covers parts of the Sun, or annular eclipses, i.e. the moon is directly in front of the Sun, but the Moon seems too small so that a ring of the Sun is still visible. In many of these cases the Sun is too bright to recogniz...e more than a slight dimming . The special solar eclipses are, of course, the total ones. These are indeed very rare. Statistically speaking, there is a total solar eclipse about every 18 months somewhere on Earth. But not every place on Earth has the same chance of experiencing a total eclipse mathematicians calculated that some places might see one only every 400 years ! To get a good view of Sun without damaging your eyes check out app Redshift Sky Pro.

Astronauts love shrimp cocktail When it comes to food in space, science has made huge progress astronauts dont rely on freeze-dried meals or nutritious pastes out of tubes anymore like they used to. One dish, however, has remained an all-time favorite shrimp cocktail Due to the low gravity on space stations, flavors are not as potent as they are down on Earth. Shrimp cocktail is so beloved by astronauts because it still tastes great at zero gravity it contains cocktail s...auce, which makes it taste tangy and spicy. Whatever your favorite dish is - with the new app Redshift Sky for Android and iOS you can discover space without changing your eating habits!
