Stunning scenes in Firoujza-Carlsen as the former loses on time in an opposite-colored bishop ending where he was as many as 3 pawns ahead! The chief arbiter has awarded the point to Carlsen as according to the rules, a theoretical mate is still possible. Meanwhile, Firouzja has appealed and the reason for the same is unclear, with different sources citing different reasons for the claim. UPDATE The appeal has been turned down and Magnus Carlsen gets the point.

The World Blitz will kick off very soon with the giants of blitz chess Nakamura and Carlsen starting as the top two seeds. However, all eyes would be on a 'certain retired legend' who is surprisingly competing at the event. His name is right here in this picture!

These words by Magnus Carlsen perfectly demonstrate how relentless his approach is! "I may play football tonight. But for me the job is only half done! There is no time to rest on the laurels. So if I do play football, it will only be because I find it to be a good way to unwind before the World Blitz."

And Koneru Humpy is the new World Women's Rapid Chess Champion! It went all the way down to the Armageddon in her tie-break match against Lei Tingjie. Humpy, playing black, had a totally winning ending but decided to settle for a draw to seal the deal. This is her first World Championship title at the open women's level. How good has she been since her comeback to chess!... ( LennartOotes/FIDE)

Koneru Humpy on winning the World Rapid This is my first World Championship title and I'm really happy having won it. People were expecting me to win the Classical World Championship for many years. Here, I was seeded only 13th. Nor I have been very good at rapid. So it was an unexpected victory for me!

Big congratulations to Ian Nepomniactchi on winning the Jerusalem and thus booking his spot for Candidates 2020! All it took was a draw in the second final against Wei Yi to seal the deal. Currently, 7 Candidates slots have been filled and 1 remains - which as per reports will be a organizer wild card for Kirill Alekseenko owing to his stellar 3rd place finish at the FIDE Grand Swiss. This means Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, who finished 3rd in the World Cup and the Grand Prix cycle, will unfortunately have to miss out on the Candidates berth. ( Niki Riga/World Chess/FIDE)

A 96-move win over Wei Yi in the first final of the Jerusalem has put Nepomniactchi within striking distance of a candidates spot via the Grand Prix cycle (and MVL on the brink of agonizingly missing out on Candidates 2020). All eyes on the second final today as it could very well give us seventh candidate!

Alexandra Kosteniuk's stunning form continues as she wins the Monaco Women's in a super-tight finish, only a few weeks after clinching the Euro Rapid and Euro Blitz very recently! In the final round, Koneru Humpy beat none other than the leader prior to the final round Alexandra Goryachkina while Kosteniuk won her game against Elisabeth Paehtz. As a result, a three-way tie emerged between Kosteniuk, Humpy, and Goryachkina. However, Kosteniuk's superio...r tie-break scores meant that she clinched the title with Humpy finishing as the runner-up and Goryachkina taking the third spot. Big Congratulations to Kosteniuk!
